Giallo was a sub-genre of the 1960s Italian ‘slasher’-movie genre & had a significant influence on subsequent works of such. The term Giallo means yellow in Italian & refers to the comic books popular in Italy at that time which featured murder & horror stories under a plain yellow cover. The stories were inspired by the earlier gothic-horror writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Giallo movies typically featured mysterious & sinister killers, explicit & gory murder-scenes coupled with strange & disturbing soundtracks. The original figure in this genre was Mario Bava whose classic movie The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963) is regarded as the first ever Giallo-movie. His later work Twitch of the Nerve of Death (1971) was hugely seminal.
He paved the way for a new generation of Italian directors, most notably Dario Argento, who both directed & wrote the music for his films. Memorable Argento classics include Deep Red (1975), Suspiria (1977) & Tenebrae (1982).
