Formed in 1968 from the break-up of The Yardbirds, The New Yardbirds soon changed their name – acting on a remark from The Who’s Keith Moon – to Led Zeppelin. They went on to become one of rocks first ‘supergroups’; travelling by private jet & steeped in debauchery , excess & even devil-worship. They are regarded as one of the most innovative & successful rock groups. Their film of the Madison Square Gardens 1976 concert, ‘The Song Remains The Same’, testifies to their huge onstage presence & success as a British act breaking into the American market.
They were one of the few bands of the time who shunned the usual music-biz route of releasing singles, preferring their albums to be ‘complete listening experiences’. Although often cited as early proponents of Heavy Metal, their music showed significant use of genres such as folk & progressive rock.
Following the death of drummer John Bonham, they disbanded to pursue solo careers in 1980. Despite the messy end of the band, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant still tour & record, sometimes collaborating on musical ventures.
