There could be some truth in the above statement, especially when we consider the chilli pepper. This bright young fruit of the Capsicum-plant family is renowned for its fiery qualities. It is used to add the fire to curries & is used extensively in Mexican cuisine. It is also used in Mediterranean cookery, adding heat to the Italian Arabiata sauce. This heat is caused by a substance present in the chilli-seed known as capsaicin. In high enough quantities, capsaicin is able to cause skin-burns. Bird’s eye chillies are among the smallest & most compact of varieties but they are also among the hottest & should be used sparingly!
