Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer & activist who led the Indian nation’s non-violent, non-cooperative movement against the British occupation in the 20th century.
A practicing Hindu, Gandhi also warmly embraced many other faiths, in particular Christianity & Islam. His eventful & dramatic life had taught him tolerance & compassion above all else, and a wisdom he was to bring to bear in the struggle for liberation. He himself had experienced great violence, when he was physically thrown from a train in South Africa; he had wandered into a ‘whites only’ first class compartment, and had been ejected for ‘having the wrong skin colour’.
His assassination in 1948 led to him becoming a legendary figure in the struggle for peace, a figure popular & inspirational to many people coping with tyranny today. He was the subject of the feature film ‘Gandhi’, played by Ben Kingsley who won an award for best actor.
