In a career spanning more than thirty years, Frank Zappa composed rock, jazz, classical/orchestral, & works described as ‘music concrete’ (avant garde). His recordings from the mid-60s reflect a playful irreverence & manic experimentation, which often involved spoken dialogues & conceptual pieces that were willfully obtuse. They went against the flower-power ideology of the time, & were much maligned as a musical force.
He also directed & produced films, & acted as an engineer, producer & sleeve designer/conceptualist. Zappa produced most of the sixty albums he had recorded with his band The Mothers Of Invention & as a solo artist. These albums were put out on his own label, Barf Pumpkin. He also mentored the careers of artists such as Alice Cooper & guitarists Adrian Belew & Stevie Vai.
Zappa is most noted for his dexterity as a guitarist, effortlessly moving from genre to genre & time-signature to signature with dizzying efficiency. An accomplished rock soloist to rival the likes of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page, Zappa could also compose vast pieces distinguished by their sheer complexity & near-classical sensibility.
He cited his influences as being the contemporary composers Edgar Varese, Igor Stravinsky & Anton Webern. His music also reflects the 50s Doo-Wop, 60s rhythm n’ blues, jazz & the then- evolving rock genre.
Highly prolific, he gained widespread international acclaim for both his contributions to guitar-based rock & also the Jazz & Classical works he had developed toward the end of his life, despite(or maybe because of) having always maintained an anarchic independence from the mainstream, whom he ruthlessly parodied.
