The t-shirt features Austin Osman Spare's "Self Portrait".
This English artist & occultist worked as both a draughtsman & as a painter. He was influenced by the Symbolism movement in painting & also the decadence of Art Nouveau. He was renowned for his clear use of line & its depiction of monstrous sexual imagery; distorted phalluses & vaginas, breasts & bestial consummations.
Much of his imagery involved symbols & animal entities as spiritual energies & how the occultist (adept) might use them. Based on his theories of the relationship between the conscious & subconscious mind, he developed magical techniques such as automatic writing/drawing, & the use of sigils (magical symbols imbued with a particular meaning or energy).
He was briefly associated with Aleister Crowley, & went on to publish a series of occult grimoires, notably Earth Inferno (1905), The Book Of Pleasure (1913) & The Focus Of Life (1921)
