INTO THE DARK SIDE: GOTH T SHIRTS
Most of us are familiar with those old staples of the classic horror movies; characters such as The Wolf Man, Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster. But this movie-genre, inspired by the gothic writers of the 19th century has itself inspired a musical subculture that is now a global phenomenon in its own right. The goth movement began in the UK in the early 1980s as an offshoot of the Post-Punk era. Bands such as The Damned, The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Mission and Bauhaus defined the goth scene and are still a big influence gothic fashion today. The Goth-punks had all the disaffectedness and the churlish anti-establishment attitude of the preceding punks, combined with a fashion-sense that was elegant and decadent; reflecting 1930s Berlin more than post-industrial Britain. Despite its early punk influences, the music of the Goth scene encompasses a broad array of musical styles ranging from folk, post-punk rock, death metal, Emo, Darkwave, neo-classical and industrial. Gothic clothing and goth t shirt styles combine Victorian frills, bouffant and lace with leather, fishnet and other clothing accessories. The predominant colour of any half decent goth t shirt is black, of course! Black is also the preferred tone for hair, clothing, eye-liner & nail varnish), but the skin really should pale (for that newly-dead pallor) and lips should be red... blood red (or black, depending on your mood). To a large extent, Emo fashion has closely followed the gothic style with a penchant for black and plenty of it. Emo T shirts also evoke a lost childhood with styles including Death Kitty and lolita, cartoon creatures and other 'out-grown accessories. But one thing the Emo cannot leave home without is the Emo Hoodie... Emo love Hoodies because they enable them to hide from the world... a world full of people who just don't understand Goth and Emo style and sensitivities.
