The term ‘Mendes’ originates from the ancient Greeks & translates as ‘God Of Egypt’. The 19th century occultist Eliphas Levi coined the term ‘The Goat of Mendes’ to describe the Tarot-arcana depiction of The Devil. He had studied the accounts of the Greek historian Herodotus who related how the Mendesians (Egyptians) revered male goats to a high degree, worshipping them as symbols of progeneration & fecundity. He also describes having personally witnessed women copulating publicly with goats in Egypt. The Greek civilization was greatly influenced by Egypt & myths & legends thereof.
Thus the Goat of Mendes became a popular choice in cults of Satanism, in whose rituals he can be seen presiding over the altar. He has the head & legs of a goat & wings (the fallen angel Lucifer). He also bears the caduceus – symbol of pyscho-sexual energy, healing & wisdom – which is placed arising from the genital area like a phallus. In such rituals Mendes may be a painting or an adept dressed to invoke him. He is also known as Baphomet, a term popularized by the occultist Aleister Crowley.
