David Gilmour CBE is an English musician & multi-instrumentalist who became lead guitarist with the psychedelic/progressive rock band Pink Floyd in the late 1960s. He was the replacement for founding member Syd Barrett who had left the band in 1968 following a drug-induced mental breakdown.
Gilmour contributed much in the way of song-writing for the band, often in a tense relationship with bassist & early co-founder Roger Waters. Despite this, Gilmour often delivered guitar melodies & vocal harmonics (lead & backing) that contributed much to Pink Floyds’ dreamy, pastoral musical landscapes.
Apart from his work as a songwriting member of Pink Floyd, Gilmour has also worked with a variety of artists as both a producer & as a guest musician. He has also released several solo albums. He is ranked at number 14 in The Rolling Stone Magazine list of outstanding guitarists of all time. Gilmour was awarded the CBE in 2005 as a reward for his contribution to music.
